The Diving around Koh Tao is amongst the best in The Gulf of Thailand, with enough variety to satisfy all levels of diver. There are sheltered, shallow bays which are ideal for students and beginners, and there are deeper sites ranging from submerged pinnacles to gentle sloping reefs. The sites have an abundance of hard and soft corals, an array of large pelagics and a rich diversity of marine life. Mango Bay is one of the most beautiful bays around Koh Tao. It is a perfect site for beginners and students, and is also ideal as a second dive for those who have had a deep first dive. The bay also provides an excellent location to do a number of Adventure dives.
Along the reef barracudas, groupers, fusiliers, blue spotted stingrays, moray eels, angelfish and butterflyfish can be seen! And the occasional Seahorse can be spotted away from the reef in the sand. Twins is one of the most popular dive sites around Koh Tao.
The site consists of two groups of submerged pinnacles which can be dived by all levels of diver, with a maximum depth of around 20m.
The resident clark’s anemonefish family, protected by a stone ring around the anemone, is one of the highlights that helps make this site so popular. Also stingrays, moray eels, juvenile angelfish, groupers, wrasse and rabbit fish can be seen in abundance. Green Rock is on the north west tip of Koh Nangyuan and consists of boulder formations that form a number of swimthroughs. The deeper parts of the site go down to around 28m and beginners and students can stay in the shallower waters alongside the island at around 10m. You will find an abundance of beautiful parrotfish, white eyed morays, blue spotted stingrays and angelfish. You can also see green turtles and there are a number of yellow-margin and titan Triggerfish, which use the sandy areas around the rocks to nest. White Rock is made up of two large granite boulders surrounded by a number of smaller ones that go down to a maximum depth of around 25m. Most of the diving can be done around 15m.
It is a very popular dive site, especially for night dives. With it’s variety of marine life White Rock is an enjoyable dive site for both students and experienced divers and it is also popular for underwater photography and videography. You can find moray eels, groupers, butterfly fish, parrotfish, snappers, angelfish, stingrays, barracudas and keep an eye out for triggerfish!
With it’s maximum depth of around 10m, Aow Leuk is ideal for students and for people trying Scuba diving for the first time. It is also ideal for certified divers to have a long, lazy dive. Its shallow, sheltered waters and huge array of corals make for a relaxing, easy to navigate dive.
There are an abundance of parrotfish, angelfish, wrasse, snappers, moray eels, stingrays, barracudas and triggerfish and there is also a chance to spot turtles and sea snakes.
Shark Island is a site you can dive by day or night and you will always have an unforgettable dive. With its large amount of different species, this site a favorite spot for all levels of diver.
The shallower part around the north-west side is full of large flat-topped rocks, table corals, small barracudas, angelfish, triggerfish, wrasse and watch out for the turtles.
The deeper part at the west end is full of beautiful soft corals. Occassionally you might see a zebra shark laying on the sandy bottom or one of the great barracudas might come and take a closer look at you. Although rare, the occasional Whale Shark has been known to visit this site.
